Does Himalayan Pink Salt Have Health Benefits?

Despite the name, Himalayan pink salt is most commonly found in Pakistan. It’s a type of salt that is prized for its beautiful pink hue and advertised as a healthier alternative to table salt.

In reality, while Himalayan pink salt contains somewhat more of certain critical elements, such as magnesium, it is insufficient to have a significant impact. Nutritionally, this lovely salt is very identical to normal salt.

While many individuals laud the health benefits of Himalayan sea salt, such as reduced sodium levels and a wider range of vital minerals and elements than normal table salt, there is little evidence to support these claims.

What is Himalayan Pink Salt?

The Salt Range Mountains in Pakistan’s remote Punjab area, south of Islamabad, are where Himalayan pink salt is extracted. It is a type of rock salt that derives its pinkish tint from impurities amist the salt. For hundreds of years, the Himalayan pink salt has been mined at least since the 1200s, and has traditionally been used for food preparation and safeguarding.

The pink tint comes from the trace minerals in Himalayan tint, which can range from mild to vivid. Finely ground pink salt has a lighter pinkish color than coarse pink salt used in a salt grinder.

Most brands of Himalayan pink salt mention on their nutrition facts labels that one serving contains 0% of the recommended value for certain minerals. Some manufacturers say Himalayan pink salt contains dozens of trace minerals, however there is little independent study to back this up.

It’s worth noting that Himalayan pink salt lacks the mineral iodine found in many other table salts. Most Americans consume enough iodine, however some groups are at risk of iodine shortage.

Just because Himalayan pink salt does not provide any additional nutritional benefits does not imply you should avoid it. Some people prefer pink salt to table salt.
